Not at the exact moment — the lit side faces away from Earth. A day or two later a thin crescent appears low in the evening sky.
When do solar eclipses happen?
Only at new moon, when the alignment is precise enough for the Moon to cast its shadow on Earth. Most new moons pass above or below the Sun, so eclipses are rare.
Is the new moon good for a haircut?
Tradition says no — wait for the waxing moon if you want faster regrowth, or for the full moon for strength.
